‘Mandy’ Mandala Superlambanana was designed and created by artist Patricia Lee. The artwork featured in Go Superlambananas 2008 – a mass participation public art event involving 125 individual pieces of art organized by Wild in Art as part of Liverpool’s Year as the European Capital of Culture 2008.

The inspiration for Mandy came from Patricia’s work for Arts in Regeneration with community groups of Granby, Toxteth and Dingle as part of the Capital of Culture's Four Corners commission. Taking inspiration from eastern mandalas, which are used to symbolise oneness and calm and as an aid to meditation, Patricia worked with community groups to produce large stained glass effect mandalas which were used to decorate trees on Princes Boulevard during an open air public art event. The aim of the event, 'Belonging - The Gathering', was to create a community, cultural celebration in an area which physically divides two communities and has been stereotyped negatively since events in the 1980s.

Mandy is designed as a symbol of peace, hope and unity and a lasting legacy to Liverpool’s vibrancy and cultural diversity. She is decorated entirely with glass, using vitreous glass mosaic, millefiori and fused glass.

The Go Superlambananas street sized sculpture was designed especially to act as a 3d canvas for artists and community groups to create individual pieces of work. It is based on original SuperLambBanana, by Japanese-based artist Taro Chiezo, whose inspiration for the design was to warn of the dangers of genetically modified food, whilst being appropriate to the city of Liverpool due to the port's rich history in the trade of lambs and the import of bananas.
